How To: Fix Kanger EVOD leaking/gurgling issues

UPDATE: This apparently works equally well with the Kanger Protank, and other Kanger BCCs with the silicone caps on the atomizer heads. If you’re having issues with those leaking or gurgling, you may want to give this a shot.

A while back I ordered a couple of Kanger EVODs because I wanted something slim for my on the go kit, and the Protank mini was not yet available (I now have two on their way to me).

I’d heard nothing but good things about them, and figured that since they can use the same heads as the Protank, I’d only have to keep one type of head on hand.

They are a great vape. Until they leak/gurgle.

At first I thought it was because I was vaping in +100F temperatures, but even in my 72F house, once I got below about 1/2 a tank the gurgling would start. Then the leaking starts.

Ok look, a quarter ml of juice sitting on top of my battery. Lovely.

At first I thought the problem was with the head. I swapped out the head with a new one from a different package. No dice, exact same problem.

I looked at the bottom of the unit, and the leak was coming through the bottom of the positive contact pin. That precludes the base to head fit being the issue (since the area where they mate was pretty dry).

I thought, well maybe I just got a defective unit. These things are mass produced in China after all, it happens. I tried the other unopened EVOD. Same result. Grrr.

So I took to the internets.

Didn’t really find anything. I found a couple of people complaining about leaking, and others having no issues at all. I deduce from the number of posts I found where people are warning about gurgling after half empty (and saying that just topping off fixes it), that this is a common problem.

I saw multiple comments saying that the juice level dropping below a certain point breaks the vacuum in the tank and causes the gurgling (I also experienced what I would call flooding). I know a little bit about fluid dynamics, and while it sounds good in theory, I’m not convinced that this is the problem. See the fact that there is a hole running through the bottom of the atomizer head into the unsealed battery connection kind of precludes a true vacuum from being present, it’s more of a surface tension effect at that point (but that’s kind of nitpicking). Still, with the viscosity of the juice, and the wick sitting across the top of the hole, and the size of the hole, it should work.

So I disassembled one.

I was sure that either the wick or the press fit between the base and the chimney was the culprit.

When I pulled the chimney off, I thought I had found the culprit. The “flavor wicks” that are set on top of the wick with the coil on it in these things are tiny! It was like two little strands of wick, not even an entire wick.

So I looked in my box of parts, and decided to replace the flavor wicks with a single piece of 2.5mm silica (I wanted to use 2mm, but I didn’t have any).

I trimmed the wick to fit, rinsed the whole thing off, filled the EVOD, and put everything back together.

Holy hell the vapor production improved ten fold! Well ok, that certainly had an effect, but did it fix the leak? It took me a while to get low enough in the tank to find out (if I had some 0mg nicotine juice I could have got there much quicker, but all I have is 24mg and 12mg at the moment). I got a hint of a gurgle, and then a mouth full of juice. Took the head off, and now there is like 3/4 of a ml of juice sitting on top of the battery.

Well it did much improve the juice intake.

So I took it all apart again. This time I paid very close attention to the press fit of the chimney and the base. It was pretty dry. I was thinking about the silicone cap and why it would be there. At first I thought it was there to seal the press fit, but looking at the press fit and how hard it is to pull the chimney off I don’t think that is it’s sole purpose. I think it is to seal the connection between the chimney and the stem inside the EVOD as well.

So I took a pair of tweezers and stuffed the cap on the stem inside the EVOD (it was essentially sitting upside down in relation to how it sits on the stem.

The ‘cup’ portion of the cap had to stretch a little bit to fit over the stem. Hmm. I wonder if the cap is just not thick enough to seal the gap between the bottom of the stem and the top of the atomizer head?

So I flipped it over on the head. It looks like this:

It doesn’t cover the press fit between the atomizer head and the base like this, but I have a back up plan if this doesn’t work.

I filled the EVOD up and installed the head with the silicone cap upside down, being careful to seat the cap over the stem in the top of the EVOD before screwing it down all the way.

I went through an entire tank, down to where I could taste the wick drying out from lack of juice. No leak. It did gurgle a little bit, but I’m pretty sure that is because I let too much condensation build up inside the tip (I was vaping with my mouth only and just immediately blowing it out as fast as I could because I wanted to get it down to where it should gurgle and flood.

NOTE: I used the head that I had replaced the flavor wick with 2.5mm silica for these tests. That may have an impact on the results. I plan to do this with all my EVOD heads as the increased vapor production is great, but I will test it on the next one without doing so first. If that changes the results, I will note that here.

So why does this work?

My theory is that the silicone cap isn’t there to cover the press fit at all (the press fit is tight enough that it’s not going to leak from there). It is there to seal the gap between the chimney and the stem on the inside of the EVOD.

As I mentioned earlier, these things are mass produced in China, and due to the fairly intricate nature of the design and the small size, it is reasonable to assume that the stem on the inside of the top of the EVOD is machined a bit shorter than it should be to ensure a good fit with a bit of ‘wiggle room’ so to speak) for variance in manufacturing tolerance between it and the heads/bases.

Just flipping the silicone cap worked for one of my EVODs, but did not work for the other (apparently the stem is just a hair too short on that one. Time to try out plan B from my earlier experiment. You are going to need an extra silicone cap for this. I took one from a spare head, but I will start saving the reusable parts from heads in the future:

Now take that second cap and put it on the head upside down. It’ll look something like this:

Time to fill her up and try it again.

I was able to get the base screwed down almost all the way (don’t force it or you risk breaking the top of the EVOD). Mine had just a hairsbreadth of a gap between the base and the top piece, plenty of room for the silicone o-ring inside the base to seal it up nice and tight.

Worked perfectly. No gurgles, no flooding (this time I wiped down the tip with a napkin when the condensation got built up), no leaking.

This is an easy fix; Kanger needs to make the top of this silicon cap just a hair thicker. Or maybe make the ‘cup’ part double sided. Either should work and is a really cheap solution to this occasional problem.

If I could not have gotten this fixed, I would never buy another EVOD, and this post would have been a review of the EVOD telling people not to waste their money.

As it stands, I’m ok with it. The EVOD works fantastically after this simple modification, and even better with the larger flavor wick.

  1. Thanks so much for this tip! I used it on my Vapor King “Smartomizer” tank which has the same type of silicone cap, and it’s working like a charm now! If only my other atomizer had the same type of silicone top… 😦

  2. My EVOD tanks have been leaking horribly and all the tips I’ve seen haven’t worked. Mine leak at the seam where the tank screws onto the atomizer. I did notice though from this blog is that my EVOD is built differently than the one pictured. You have 2 o-rings below the coil, mine only has the lower ring. It seems as though mine is missing that whole metal piece between the lowest o-ring and the coil. But thanks to your detailed post and pictures, maybe I’ve moved a step in the right direction of figuring out why mine leaks. Thanks!

  3. Thanks so much! Such an easy fix and it works great. Still get a bit of gurgling as the tank gets low but that’s to be expected from any cartomizer. Thanks again!

  4. Thank you so much for this!

I’ve been using these tanks for months now without any issues and really like them. Then the place I buy my replacement atomisers from ran out of stock for a couple of weeks but since they got them back in I’ve been having this issue of them leaking and gurgling every time they got half way down.

After a week or so of it happening, I decided to buy two new tanks just in case it was because my tanks were a few months old and maybe I’d damaged them when washing them out but the problem occurred on the new tanks from day one.

I was just about to give up and try to find a new model to try when I found your blog post and it’s completely solved the problem for me! Now vaping away without any leaks or gurgling and not having to clean out the tank every time I go to fill it up just to keep it working for another couple of hours.

I’ll share this with my brother and our friend who both use these tanks too. Thanks again!

  5. Its so funny that I just found your post after figuring this out for myself! I tried everything from rebuilding the coil to rewicking with cotton, adding more corton over the coil, the list goes on.. The double silicone (one normal one flipped) worked perfectly after messing with this thing for weeks! No gurgle, no flooding, perfect vape. Thank you for publishing this, I was about to post it myself, and was relived to see you already had. Anyone else experiencing this, try it! It works!

  6. I replaced the offending o ring with the mouthpiece cap from a refillable Halo carto. The mouthpiece cap is a little taller than the supplied o ring and I had to put a little pressure on the battery to screw it in, but it immediately solved the problem!

  7. I tried this fix on my evod, with a brand new coil and two of the silicone cups, one from my old coil, one from the new. I started vaping like normal and I am still getting the puddling of ejuice in the top of the battery after a few draws. This is with a brand new, genuine Kangertech coil as well. Any other ideas? I’m pretty fed up with this and about to stop using Kanger bottom coils all together, because I hear even the protanks and unitanks suffer from the same issue.

  8. I did as you suggested and it worked great, but not long after I made the change, the silicone slid on to the stem in the tank and wouldn’t come off. It is now all the way inside of the tank. I took another silicons “washer” and instead of flipping it upside-down I put it on top of the bottom one with the top also facing up. So far, it is working the way it should as your fix. The one that went inside the tank does not seem to have an adverse affect except that some of the juice is now trapped between the silicone and the top of the tank. But still, thank you for your fix!

  9. Well i tried both but Just Flipping That Rubber Over Worked Fine But I Still Get A Small Burnt Taste I bought Watermelon And It Is Just Straight Burnt Taste idk What It Could Be Because The Company I get It From Uses The same Percent Of Vg And Pg In The Juice …..

  10. This made it worse for my protank 2. looks like im the only ont though. but i accidentally for got to put the silicone cap back on eariler and so far ive smoked it down til theres only a quarter tank left. it looks like the silicone cap actually DOES NOT do anything. I thought i would just share incase this method did not work for some of you. I also have one of those extra O rings under the coil. i dont understand why it works but it does and thats good enough. Now I can finally vape again without having to refill every 5 min!

  11. I have a simple question. Can I do this double cup method with the original atomizer it came with? Or do I absolutely need to put 2.5mm silica wick in it? This was a great tutorial. Hats off to you man. Thanks for your time and knowledge.

  12. I kept about a dozen coils I thought were faulty. This fix saves me money and improves the experience. Thanks for sharing this!

  13. How did you change the wick? My tiny wick fell out while I was cleaning it, and disappeared. I have some different longer wicks from an older tank but how did you put it back in there?

  14. Tried this and it didn’t work for me. I’ve had several different tanks and every one has leaked onto the battery. I can leave a full tank overnight and in the morning it’s completely empty due to leaking onto the battery or up the central pipe. I think the problem is that the juice goes through the fibres to the coil and then just runs down inside the connector onto the battery. There is no seal, as that’s how you get airflow from outside onto the coil and up to your mouth. Isn’t there a tank that has a sealed bottom on the market?

    • Kanger doesn’t make top coil clearos. To contrast your experience, I have a ProTank II sitting in a cup waiting to be rebuilt that has been full for over two months with no leakage.

Sorry that you’re having bad luck!

  15. I have a mini pro tank 2 on a evod v3. The single cup flip worked like a charm on mine! Thanks so much, great thinking ☺️

  16. I’m new to vaping and the EVOD was recommended as a decent starter kit. After leaking all over an expensive suit, and sucking juice down my throat I was ready to throw the whole kit off my 23rd floor balcony and go back to analog. The single cup flip made ALL the difference. Thanks for posting this!

  17. I’m new to vaping and have an EVOD2 kit. I always have a drop of juice on top of my battery and a of crackle/gurgle. My atomizers do not look like what you have pictured with the ‘cup’ type o-ring. None of the five that came with the package do…did I buy something with an old style atomizer, or did I get the wrong atomizers in my package?

  18. Is it just me or does it seem to leak out alot more when in hotter temperatures? I mean if u think about it, that makes sense because the juice gets much thinner as if melting when its hot. Problem is, I live in Arizona so it’s typically hot more than not and my juice seems to leak like crazy in the heat! Is there any way to fix this or am I better off getting a vape pen that doesn’t typically leak so much like maybe one that you put the juice in from top instead of from the bottom?

    • It’s actually the transitions between cold and hot environments that tend to cause the most leaking.

I’ve not had any leaking at all with the Subtanks if you’re looking for a tank upgrade.

  19. Mine leak around the viewing glass. They last a month then start leaking. Is this were everybody elses are leaking. Im going to try your little trick,I hope it works.

  20. At last! An uncomplicated solution! My EVOD is a little.. mature, and this occasional problem has become too frequent. After stumbling across this post in the middle of the night I’m pretty sure I’ve just avoided the painful process of buying a new one. So thanks 🙂

  21. Just got a protank 2 and I’m having flooding a gurgling issues. Will try this. I however happen to work in gasket production so will do a little experimenting myself. Thanks for the advise

  22. Got a T3S back in March then got locked up… Gurgling happened a few times back then and started happening again today with my last coil. Don’t have the money yet to get a box mod so this post just saved my life. Great job, Sandman… And a huge thank you from me !

  23. Seems to be working so far, Thanks! Now if I can just fill them without having juice run down the tube when I take the coil off to refill it. Always have to have a napkin handy.

  24. Worked like a champ with a 1.5 Ohm coil on the Kang Pro II! No gurgling and no more juice in my mouth. I didn’t “augment” the wicks but it now makes a ton more vapor. I believe the tube the cup seal butts up against may be slightly set higher on the ones that leak and adding the extra cup seal hollow base up makes up for the difference.

    • I’m going to assume you mean the silicone cup seal. If you’ve got more than one of the old style kanger atomizer heads, just pull one off of those (that’s what I did). If you’re looking to buy, just get a pack of five and use one of those.

  25. My EVOD was making me crazy. I had wasted at least 3 batteries on this, juice leaking and killing the batteries.
This simple solution totally fixed the issue. Many thanks.

  26. I was experiencing the same exact problems. I tried tightening with a pliers, filling to different levels, you name it I tried it but it made absolutely no difference at all! Just kept leaking until one day I needed to change my coil and all that I had available was a coil that my friend gave me that was slightly longer. Low and behold…PROBLEM SOLVED! So try a different size coil, can’t believe it, NO MORE LEAKING!

  27. To anybody still having this issue with the protank 3, take the other silicone ring off of your second coil. Put one on normally and the other flipped. That should solve all the problems 😃😃😃😃 good luck and happy vaping 😊😊😊💨💨💨💓💓💓

  28. I can’t tell you how much better my life is after reading this. Such a simple idea and it works. Kept thinking it was because there was a faint crack in mouthpiece. Thankd godofsteam!

  29. Absolutely brilliant! You saved the day! The very knowledgeable guy at the store couldn’t even solve this case. One more day cigarette free😄

  30. Outstanding information. Thank you so much for sharing. My problem is a little different in that it doesn’t leak as much when it is less full than fuller, thought it was the other o-rings and found this by searching on evod orings to buy more… but I’ll scavage from other heads I have first. I was so frustrated by the leaking on EVERYTHING – now I have hope… I like my slim evod, didn’t want to go to some bulky tank system – or break down and buy smokes. So again THANKS!
